The Purpose of the Course

Take a day to reassess the purpose of your role and how to achieve the key tasks. Look at ways to manage the less productive tasks and then pick up lots of tips and techniques to help make things run more smoothly (one simple technique has saved many previous participants over an hour a week)! Take away a list of practical tasks and habit changes that you know will make a difference to the way you work.

Today’s working environment seems to demand more of people in less time with fewer resources and it becomes easy to get overwhelmed and lose sight of the priorities. This workshop will give you the opportunity to think about your role and identify the tasks that really get results. It then gives tips and techniques on how to spend more time on these tasks, and less on the others – it also looks at the tools that are available to help get you organised, and how to get the best out of them.

Who is this course for?

Anyone who has some discretion about how he/she uses time – it is also helpful if participants have been in their current assignment for at least two months.

  • Batching and scheduling techniques
  • ‘Busy’ tasks: how to recognise and eliminate them

  • Tips and techniques for effective delegation

Planning tasks, ‘to do’ lists and diaries

  • Task planning
  • Daily planning: managing the diary and ‘to do’ list
  • Outlook tips and techniques
  • Recognising and overcoming procrastination

Managing Time Wasters

  • Dealing with ‘drop-in visitors’ and long-winded ‘phone calls
  • Desk management and handling paperwork and e-mail

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of making time to plan.
  • Establish the key tasks needed to achieve effective performance.
  • Reduce and manage the reactive and less productive tasks.
  • Set effective priorities.
  • Set up an effective system to manage task lists, ‘to do’ lists and diaries.
  • Recognise and deal with procrastination.
  • Manage the time wasting elements of their role.
  • Set up an effective system to deal with paperwork and e-mails.
  • Use diaries, calendars and emails more effectively.
