Keep motivated for the marathon

In my last blog I talked about the importance of finding a variety of different routes to help keep you motivated. This time I would like to share some of the other tricks of the trade that helped me keep going when I was preparing for my marathon last year.

1) Get an Activity Tracker

Trackers are a great way to keep yourself motivated. You can monitor how you are performing against previous runs that you’ve done. It helps you keep track of your progress and you can turn your runs into mini competitions with yourself!

2) Stay Hydrated

Common symptoms of dehydration include feeling tired, dry eyes, cramps, headaches and muscle spasms so it’s really important to make sure that you drink enough when you’re running. I would definitely suggest that you invest in a water backpack for longer runs as they carry a lot more water than water bottles and can make a massive difference to how you feel.

3) Layers, Layers and more Layers

Dressing in layers can transform a cold winter run from a miserable event into an uplifting day. They help you to run comfortably because they keep you warm at the beginning and then as you get hotter you can tie them around your waist. I would definitely recommend you shop around to get the best deals!

4) Have a Variety of Routes

Okay, so I may have mentioned this last time… but it really can make a big difference to your motivation levels! If you’re struggling to come up with different routes I’d highly recommend you visit MapMyRun at This is a great website which helps you find routes near you. It also includes advice about training, challenges and blogs featuring lots of useful tips!
