TEAM Energy survey highlights rising momentum and optimism in the net zero transition

TEAM Energy has unveiled the findings of its “Carbon Countdown: Progress Towards Net Zero” survey, offering insights from over 100 UK organisations spanning various sectors and sizes.

The results point to a notable increase in net zero pledges, a strong drive for sustainability, and a cultural shift, despite ongoing financial and operational hurdles.

Key highlights:

  • 49% of organisations have formally committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions. Of these, 34% are aiming for 2030, while 26% are aligned with the UK Government’s 2050 target.
  • The top motivators are corporate social responsibility (56%) and brand reputation (53%), underscoring the growing influence of ethical values and public image in sustainability planning.
  • Staff engagement is on the rise, particularly among younger employees, with many organisations reporting improved efficiency and enthusiasm for carbon reduction efforts.
  • Financial support and training are seen as critical enablers, with 73% seeking funding and 64% prioritising education to advance their net zero goals.

Leadership driving change
The survey reveals that leadership is increasingly central to net zero progress. Nearly 75% of organisations report moderate to strong leadership involvement, suggesting that executive teams are actively championing sustainability and helping embed climate action into organisational culture.

As part of the survey respondents shared their optimism and commitment to sustainability:

“We have good intentions to do whatever we can to reduce our carbon footprint.”

“Carbon emissions mapping has brought greater efficiency in all departments and functions. We have also noticed a higher level of staff engagement, particularly among the younger generations.”

“Net zero is made even more attractive by seeing our competitors reducing and posting all net zero emissions on their social media and websites.”

“We have just started looking at this but want to make our company more energy efficient and reduce our usage.”

A varied path to decarbonisation
Energy efficiency upgrades are the most common strategy, adopted by 79% of organisations. This is followed by waste and recycling initiatives (76%), renewable energy adoption (59%), and behavioural change programmes (52%). Other approaches include fleet electrification, sustainable supply chains, and carbon offsetting, demonstrating a broad and practical commitment to reducing emissions.

Sector specific insights

  • Government bodies are leading, with 45% targeting net zero by 2030 and 70% implementing measures like fleet electrification and energy efficiency improvements.
  • Charities and trusts show strong ambition, with 60% aiming for net zero between 2030 and 2040, driven by leadership and community values.
  • Educational institutions are setting bold goals, with 40% targeting 2030, though many face challenges related to heritage buildings and staffing.
