AI Playbook for the UK Government

AI is at the core of the UK Government’s strategy to drive economic growth and enhance public service delivery. It offers remarkable opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce operational costs, and foster innovation in both local and national governance. However, with the rapid advancement of AI, it is crucial to acknowledge its constraints and potential risks, including ethical, legal, privacy, sustainability, and security concerns.

Who the AI Playbook is For

The AI Playbook is freely accessible on GOV.UK and is designed to assist government departments, arm’s length bodies, and public sector organisations. It caters to a diverse audience, including civil servants with varying levels of digital expertise, offering clear and practical insights into AI capabilities and best practices.

This initiative is particularly relevant to businesses and professionals in Northamptonshire, as AI adoption continues to shape various industries. Understanding AI’s role in government decision-making and service delivery can create synergies between public sector advancements and private sector opportunities.

Key Features of the AI Playbook

The AI Playbook expands on previous government guidance to include a broader range of AI technologies such as:

  • Machine Learning
  • Deep Learning
  • Natural Language Processing
  • Computer Vision
  • Speech Recognition

In addition, the Playbook is complemented by new AI training courses available on Civil Service Learning and Government Campus, developed in collaboration with leading tech firms and the Government Skills unit.

Structure of the AI Playbook

The Playbook is organised into five key sections:

  1. 10 AI Principles – Guidelines all civil servants should follow when using AI in government.
  2. Introducing AI – An overview of AI fundamentals, applications, and limitations.
  3. Building AI – Practical guidance on implementing AI, including procurement, user research, and team-building.
  4. Using AI Safely and Responsibly – Focus on ethical, legal, and security aspects such as bias, privacy, and cybersecurity.
  5. AI Use Cases in the Public Sector – Case studies showcasing AI’s impact in various government functions.

Each section includes checklists with actionable recommendations for AI project development, alongside a new series of AI Insights articles that explore technical aspects in greater depth.

A Collaborative Effort

The AI Playbook was developed with input from over 50 experts from the Government Digital Service (GDS) and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). Contributions from over 20 government departments and public sector organisations, as well as peer reviews from industry and academic advisors, have ensured that the Playbook provides relevant, practical, and forward-thinking AI guidance.
