Meningitis: Know the Signs. Act Fast. Save Lives.

Meningitis is a serious infection of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It can affect anyone but is most common in babies, young children, teenagers and young adults. Some forms, particularly bacterial meningitis, are rare but life threatening and need urgent medical treatment.

Meningitis can sometimes lead to sepsis (blood poisoning), a dangerous reaction to infection that can develop very quickly and may initially look like flu. Sepsis can cause dangerously low blood pressure, organ failure and, in severe cases, can be fatal without prompt hospital care.
