A business owner said something to me recently that I suspect many others are thinking. ‘When my leadership team asked what our AI plan was, I realised I didn’t have an answer’. She had built a genuinely successful business over fifteen years, and AI was the one topic where she suddenly had nothing to say.

 

That moment has nothing to do with technology. Most business owners in that position aren’t behind on AI knowledge, they’re missing a way to decide what’s actually worth doing. Everyone around them is talking about tools. Almost nobody is talking about which business problems those tools should solve, and that gap is what turns a confident leader into someone who goes quiet in their own meeting.

 

Once there was a clear framework, the conversation became much easier. A few weeks later, that same owner didn’t dodge the question anymore. A few weeks later, she’s opening the meeting herself, saying ‘here are the three areas where AI will actually move the needle, and here’s the order we’re tackling them in.’ Nothing about the business changed overnight. What changed was that the decision finally had a structure behind it.
